Life Legacy

Laurence Raymond McAneny I of Granite City passed away Wednesday, January 30, 2013 in Silver Spring, Maryland. He was born April 12, 1926 in Seattle Washington to Cornelius Xavier and Hazel Constance nee Windmiller McAneny. Laurence was a member of the United States Navy from 1943-1946. He had earned a doctorate in Physics, and taught at Southern Illinois University—Edwardsville from 1957 to 1988. He had been Dean of Science and Technology there for 6 years. He was instrumental in getting accreditation for the University’s School of Engineering.

Laurence was a member of the A.O.P.A. He loved flying and became an enthusiastic general aviation pilot.

He is survived by his son, Laurence Raymond McAneny II and his wife Faye of Silver Spring, MD; two daughters, Dr. Barbara McAneny and her husband Dr. Steve Kanig of Albuquerque, NM and Julie Pitts and her husband Alan of Pueblo, CO; step daughter, Lisa Oliver of Granite City; step son, John Douglas and his wife Patricia of Granite City; four grandchildren and two step grandchildren; and sister, Mary Slotnick of Seattle, WA. He was preceded in death by his wife Mabel “ Louise” McAneny, by his former wife Lucy Helen McAneny, by his brothers, Jack, Neil, and Bob; his sister, Amelia Freitas; and by one grandchild, Meghan McAneny.

Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at Wojstrom Funeral Home and Crematory, where they will continue Monday, February 4, 2013 from 10 am until the time of service at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Sunset Hills Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, IL.
