Life Legacy
Merlee (Lee) Wagner, resident of Glen Carbon, IL, died on Saturday July 21, 2012.
She was born on November 23, 1928 in Champaign, IL, the daughter of Grace Colvin Wagner and Harold Eugene (Gene) Wagner.
She is survived by her brother, Meldon (Bus) Wagner of Champaign, IL and by many loving friends who cared deeply for her. She will be sorely missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her dear friends, June Reddish and Audrey Hiles.
Lee attended Illinois State University in Bloomington/Normal where she earned a degree in Physical Education as well as participated in multiple sports. She taught at Champaign High School for 5 years and also coached women’s sports activities. Driven to help others, she obtained a Physical Therapy degree from the Mayo Clinic, where she graduated with honors.
Lee had a long and successful career at The University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago where she made a significant contribution to the hospital’s Center for Handicapped Children. She was the sole physical therapist on an innovative interdisciplinary medical team responsible for patient care for severely and multiply handicapped children, ages birth to 18 years. In addition, she participated in research and clinical teaching for medical students and orthopedic residents. Lee’s hard work and dedication reflected her lifelong commitment to children and to helping others.
After retiring, Lee moved to Glen Carbon where she immediately became involved in the community. She actively supported women’s athletics at Edwardsville High School and SIUE, faithfully cheering on the basketball and softball teams for many years. Equally important, she encouraged students to maximize their educational opportunities, to do things right and to do their best.
Lee was also an active user and supporter of the Glen Carbon Library, with a focus on children’s summer programs. She was very proud of the Glen-Ed Pantry and faithfully supported this valuable community resource in multiple ways for many years. An avid animal lover, she also supported the Humane Society and participated in greyhound rescue activities.
Lee’s loyal support of others and commitment to giving back were defining characteristics, as so many people came to experience during her lifetime. She will be remembered for her straight-talking and fun loving nature. Services will be private. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois for their Pet Therapy Program (305 Southern Illinois Ave, Belleville, IL 62220).
