Biography

Essie I. White, of Granite City, IL died at 11:26 p.m. Sat. July 24, 2010 at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City, IL.

She was born Aug. 4, 1931 in Corning, AR to the late Elvie Christopher Columbus & Dora Lessie (Thom) Austin.

On Nov. 1, 1956, she and Bennie J. White were married in St. Louis, MO. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1996.

Essie spent most of her life as a homemaker, however she was very proud of the time she spent working as a Nurse’s Aide helping kids at Shriners Hospital for Children. She was a member of the Church of Christ, participating in the Ladies Group. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting as well as playing video games.

She is survived by: a daughter, Joyce Chrystalene White-Parker of Pontoon Beach, 4 sons and 3 daughters-in-law, Michael J. & Vicki White of Granite City, Phillip W. White & his companion, Julie Gentry of Pontoon Beach, Scott T. & Sheila White of Granite City and Jeffrey A. & Shelly White of Trenton, IL, 10 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild, a sister, Marie Moore of Riverside, CA and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by 8 brothers and sisters.

Visitation will be Tues. 7/27/10 from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory, where services will be Wed. 7/28/10 at 9:30 a.m. with Pastor Philip Treat officiating. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund (JDRF).
